We improve advanced cardiovascular treatments at Northside’s research center
New statement shows PCI without surgery on site is as safe as PCI with surgery on site
Writing group proposes a new PCI treatment algorithm that will expand the type of cases that can be performed with no-SOS.
WASHINGTON (January 30, 2023) – A new expert consensus statement from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) suggests that percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) without surgery on site (no-SOS) is as safe as PCI at centers with on-site surgery across randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and international experiences. The statement, published today in the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (JSCAI) and JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, explains that adequate operator experience, appropriate clinical judgment and case selection, and facility preparation are essential to a safe and successful PCI program with no-SOS.
Cardiovascular research means state-of-the-art for your heart
The Northside Hospital Cardiovascular Institute Center for Research brings state-of-the-art cardiovascular expertise, treatment and technology to all five Northside hospital campuses and our outpatient centers throughout the Atlanta Region.
As part of a patient-oriented health system, NCVI’s Center for Research sees up close the needs of patients as we treat heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women and men in the United States.
That means we uniquely can map out our cardiovascular research priorities based on the specific heart disease conditions faced by our patients. We bring targeted cardiovascular research to you.
Our patient-focused approach to clinical trials is a unique value of the heart research institute
The Northside Hospital Cardiovascular Institute Center for Research conducts clinical trials to determine the best drugs, devices and treatments for the highest quality care for our patients. We design many of our own studies, based on our observations as a patient-oriented hospital serving the Atlanta Region as well as the Southeast. We simultaneously participate in multisite research created by other groups.
The clinical trials we conduct as a heart research institute are the most effective way to determine cause and effect when it comes to new therapies and whether they safely and reliably treat heart disease. Our combination of daily clinical expertise and applied research creates the best treatment recommendations for cardiologists and their patients.
Why does this matter to you? This availability means:
- Convenience to patients. We offer trials to patients without them having to travel long distances.
- Increasing the availability of clinical trials to more patients can shorten the time it takes to bring new treatments to the market.
- Providing access to clinical trials in a community setting helps move science forward, with the findings benefiting all patients.
Globally recognized leadership for cardiovascular research
Globally recognized cardiologist and researcher Dr. Cindy Grines leads the Northside Hospital Cardiovascular Institute Center for Research. She is our chief scientific officer, and she is credited for pioneering percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for heart attacks.
Grines is past president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). The group is the world’s preeminent society for standards of interventional cardiology – a less invasive, highly effective form of heart treatment that relies on the insertion of catheters, which decreases recovery time.
She is only the third female interventional cardiologist to lead SCAI. Her expertise and visionary mindset help steer a course for the future of interventional cardiology and how cath lab teams adapt their patient care.
